Lilbourne Church had a Harvest Evening Service which had been slowly declining over the years and a supper and auction on the Monday evening which had also been on the decline. The decision was taken to combine the service and the supper on the same evening. The first year that we did this we got one of the Church members to make some home brewed beer and advertised "Free beer in Church". People now are happy to come knowing they will have a good service and a good supper in a congenial atmosphere. The service (Prayer Book Evensong) is accompanied by the smell of the meal keeping warm. Quite a challenge to any preacher. The meal is served at tables squeezed into every nook & cranny of the Church. Numbers that attend approach 100, mainly from the village (total population 360) |
